Water is known as the strangest chemical. It is a chemical substance formed of elements hydrogen and oxygen, which exists in all three states (solid, liquid and gas). It is tasteless and odorless. Since water is readily convertible into vapour (gas), it can travel through the atmosphere from the oceans to the mainland where it condenses and nourishes life.
Each water molecule is composed of two hydrogen atoms, each linked by a single chemical bond to an oxygen atom. One of the most important chemical properties of water is that, it can exist as an acid and a base. There is 1.5 billion cubic kilometers of water on earth and thus, it covers 70% of our planet. Two-thirds of the human body is made up of water.
When water freezes, it expands and decreases its density. Thus, a solid (ice) floats on its own liquid (water). Earth is the only planet which is covered with liquid water. Water also helps create the protective membranes around the cells. In fact, the Solar System has water too. Comets are simply balls of frozen water and they brought water to the Earth billions of years ago.
Water is also called the universal solvent due to its ability to dissolve a large number of substances. Natural water can be classified into two types - hard and soft. The purest form of water is rainwater. Water freezes and melts and plays an important role in balancing the ecosystem.
The chemical combination of water made life possible on earth. It flows through our blood vessels, our blood is 55% water. We need to drink at least 2 liters of water each day to maintain a healthy appetite.
Even when 70% of the earth is water only 1% of that is drinkable. In fact, the 90% of that 1% is in Antarctica.
We evolved from water and for our survival we will always depend water.
