Do you remember the – “CAPTCHA”??
Certainly, my question
will seem absurd to most. But why was Captcha introduced in the first place?
It was to recognize a robot from a human…Have you noticed that the average
presence of Captcha is reducing these days? It is not because Captcha is
absent. It is only because our old means are not applicable anymore. We are
living in a world where only recently an AI platform (ChatGPT) tricked a human
into opening the Captcha of a website.
Today, AI’s presence in
the network is recognized by a process called the average click rate. It is
based on the pattern recognition of the number of clicks a person makes per
minute. Our discussion is not about Pattern recognition or the disappearance of
the nostalgic (for its crazy pictures) Captcha. It is on the development of
Artificial Intelligence itself. AI is an application of a pathway called the
Artificial Neural Network (ANN). It is a pattern which runs based on the
functioning of our very own human nervous system. AI platforms learn mainly in
three different ways: Supervised Learning, Unsupervised Learning and
Reinforcement Learning. This is important because, AI requires sustained human
interaction only in Supervised Learning. But Supervised Learning is not the
widely used independent mode. The popular method is reinforcement learning in
which Artificial Intelligence learns by pattern recognition. It has come to a level
where even computer scientists cannot comprehend how our systems are learning
beyond a point. Not very earlier, Facebook had to shut down two of their AI
systems because they started to create a language of their own which the humans
could not decipher. AI is surely a boon, because it can do things which we
cannot. It is more efficient, tireless and much more. But this in itself is
the scariest part, it does things which we cannot. How can we be sure that it
will not try to annihilate an inferior species which is hopelessly trying to control it? This is what famous Science Entrepreneurs like Elon Musk says.
AI is not just what we
see in our social media platforms or hospitals or web browsers. The potential
of AI is far reaching, it can even affect international issues like the Defense and Security of a nation.
Artificial Intelligence is surely going to be
humanity’s greatest invention. But what if our own masterpiece destroys us?
IF that happens, one
cannot help but feel like a spaghetti in a black hole thrown to singularity,
while pondering on what Stephen Hawking said.
